When your Union Bargaining Committee negotiated your present Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), they were proactive and wisely negotiated and inserted language into your contract that allowed for the Union to renegotiate wages in the event that the minimum wage increased above any of the wages in the agreement.
Over the past few years, the IAM has been proudly fighting alongside with the Workers Action Centre and other community groups and labour organizations in the Fight For $15 and Fairness at workplaces across Ontario and throughout Canada.
In late November, Bill 148 passed in the Ontario Legislature and shortly after reached royal assent. The minimum wage aspect of this Bill is what applies to workers in the airline industry and under Federal jurisdiction.
As of January1, 2018, the new minimum wage for all workers in Ontario has increased to $14.00\/hr.
On December 4, 2017, your Union served Swissport with notice to renegotiate the wages as per the language that was negotiated in good faith and inserted into Appendix \u201cB\u201d of your CBA.
I have since forwarded fair and reasonable wage scale proposals to the Company that would account for the new minimum wage and would also respect our member\u2019s years of service and seniority. Unfortunately, Swissport has not agreed with any of the proposals I have sent them and thus far, they seem to have no interest in the \u201cFairness\u201d aspect of the Fight for $15 and Fairness.
I have since indicated to Swissport that the Union would likely be arbitrating this matter as the parties seem to be at an impasse.
I will keep you posted as this matter progresses.
